Termites gain entrance either through expansion joints or cracks in the cement slab, or by following any wood which contacts support beams in your crawlspace.  Once they find wood, they burrow inside and start eating.

The best ways to prevent possible termite infestation are to avoid direct soil or water contact with the home foundation.  Water should be diverted away from the home by gutters and drains, and a gap of at least 1 inch should be left between the soil and wood portions of the building.
